And speaking of different strokes, we visited one this day, featured in the
picture below. And no, that's not our trailer in the background -- that
one is even older.
All his life, Roy had wanted to establish a Museum of Family Camping.
Toward this end, and much to his wife's chagrin, he collected camping artifacts
in his garage. Sadly, Roy died before the realization of his dream, but
others took up the torch and found the collection a permanent home. We
simply had to visit it. The girls were frankly horrified that we were
going to something so cheesy. They are not yet at that stage in their
lives where cheesyness can be enjoyed for its own sake. So, we went.
On the way there, the girls said "We will probably be the only visitors
there!". I bet them each $1 that there would be at least one other
visitor there when we arrived.
I lost.
Below is a shot of one display Roy created, diorama-style, showing a
primitive campsite.

This was perhaps the high point of the exhibit. A small-scale diorama
of a campground, complete with playground, pool, trailers and campers.
Those are "Matchbox" cars in the parking lot. A sign said the
diorama was used for educational purposes. I can't imagine what the
subject might have been...

The best part for us was the video library, which contained a grainy video of
Wally Byam's 1959 Airstream caravan from Cape Town to Cairo, traversing most of
Africa from South to North. It was amazing -- 30 odd families towing their
trailers across 10,000 or so miles of mostly dirt road, over 6 months.
They visited with many of the native peoples they encountered on the way.
We next set out and explored Concord, finding it tidy and shiny. We
also located a nice co-op that sold organic food, and so we stocked up the
larder.
After putting away the groceries and eating a quick dinner, we went out to
see a film in a theater. The consensus choice was "Legally
Blond". I thought it was adequate, but certainly not
exceptional. The laides all loved it.
