As we crossed the border into Maine, we were met with this sign, and the town
of Kittery: a town completely devoted to shopping malls and shoppers. We were horrified.
"Is
this all people do in Maine?" we asked ourselves as we drove through the
third town full strip malls and outlet stores. We had been recommended to go to the L.L. Bean
outlet store, however. So we went, and Jody found something for which she
had been looking for quite a long time: a basket with straps that enabled it to
be worn on the back. We bought it, and high-tailed it out of there, trying
to find "the real Maine".
We did not find it in "Old Orchard Beach", a kind of Coney Island
beach town laying in one 7 mile long strip of clam shacks, video arcades and
T-shirt shops.
We camped in pretty much the first place that could take us, Bayley's RV
Resort, and were
thoroughly horrified at the prices. "60$ PER NIGHT?" asked a
disbelieving Jody. We were kind of desperate -- it being late at the end
of a long driving day -- so we took it, reluctantly. "It's only for a
night or two..." We also made a note for the future to avoid
places with "Resort" in their name.
Below, Doug and Jody enjoy they're first Maine Lobster in about 8 years.
It
was about $6 a pound, and delicious, although it yielded only about 5 bites
each. The girls politely declined, keeping their "if it has eyes, I'm not eating it" policy intact.

Joya and Jordan get their money's worth out of the diving board and pool,
spending large amounts of time there. We ended up staying another night, much to the delight of the girls, who were
loving all of the opportunities provided by the park.

Doug and Joya at work on the computer. You can see Doug on the right,
downloading everyone's email -- using the trash can's shadow in order to see the
screen. It wasn't too scenic, and was hot as hell in the baking sun.

And so we continued North, still in search of something in Maine besides kitsch
and strip malls...
