We drove West from Mansfield to a lovely state park near Independence,
Kansas, set into a winding canyon. Our campsite overlooked the lake -- and
the pit toilets, which you can see silhouetted in front of the lake.
The next morning we drove to Independence. This was another "Little House" location -- the Little
House on the Prairie was here -- or rather its reconstruction was. It was
not far out of our way, so we traveled the back roads out to see it, only to
find that it was closed. However, we were able to snap a picture from the
street. You can see why she called it a little house -- this one room log
cabin was home to the family of 5, plus their dog Jack.

After a quick visit, we continued our Westward rush, this time across most of
Kansas.
