February 25 - Fort Davis
Obviously, pictures in the dark are hard to get much out of, however with
our stellar narrative we're sure you will feel like you were there, too. For
those of you who haven't been to a cavern, going inside one goes against
everything your natural inclinations tell you. The mouth of of the Caverns is
a big gaping yawn in the side of a hill. During some months of the year there
are thousands of bats that live in the entrance to the Cavern, but they were
still in Mexico so we didn't see them. The walk down, into the main
"room", is about a 750' descent into a dark, humid place. The caves
are magnificent to behold. The humidity is between 90% and 100% and mostly
completely dark. Almost nothing lives in that environment so it is clean in
the sense there is no biology going on (not much living and therefore not much
decaying). The caves are well lit, softly and to highlight the formations.
People are asked to keep their voices soft as well. Here are Joya and Jody
speaking softly to each other.
The following unimpressive photos were of very impressive things. Many of the
formations were millions of years in the making.
In the next picture, Joya is pretty sure she is going to live through the
experience and consequently Doug and Jody think they're going to make it as
well.
