We had a great stay at our campground in Fort Davis, so we left in a leisurely fashion, headed in the general direction of Austin. We figured to drive as far as we felt like, then look for a place to stay. Since the driving was pretty easy (not many hills, and after Sonora the country got lots more interesting to look at), we ended up heading all the way into Austin. Jody navigated us through downtown Austin to McKinny Falls State Park, which is very close to downtown but is an oasis of quiet natural beauty. The camping spaces are far from each other, and we were surrounded by woods. The night we arrived, the air temperature was in the mid 70s and very humid. We all rejoiced! At last, we could wear short sleeves. We had dinner outside (until it started raining), and the mood was light and happy. Our current read-aloud is "Modoc", a wonderful story of a boy and 'his' elephant -- highly recommended. Jody read to us, and we all went to bed. February 27 - Mylie and Mardi Gras |
